-*-*-*- Tips & Tricks -*-*-*-
Three tips this time! Our belated Christmas gift. :o)
- Have a hard time picking that boundary hiding behind the hatch?
Ever wonder how you can select an object underneath another?
It's called 'Object Cycling' and it couldn't be much easier!
When selecting an object that is in any way obscured by another, hold
down the CTRL key as you pick. Each time you click the mouse a
different object is highlighted. When you see the one you want,
press ENTER (or spacebar or right-click) and you're in business!
- When you have multiple running OSNAPs and many valid choices, how can
you expect AutoCAD to choose the one you had in mind? You can't.
That's why you have to help it out sometimes with 'OSNAP Cycling'.
If AutoCAD doesn't pick the OSNAP you were hoping for, simply press
the TAB key repeatedly and watch the OSNAPs change. When you see the
one you're looking for, click away!
- Want to create special characters in AutoCAD, Word, and any other
ASCII-based program? Hold down the ALT key and enter the associated
ASCII code on the numeric keypad. Here are some favorites:
ALT + 241 ± (plus/minus)
ALT + 248 ° (degrees)
ALT + 0248 ø (diameter)
ALT + 172 ¼ (one quarter)
ALT + 171 ½ (one half)
ALT + 0446 ¾ (three quarters)
ALT + 0418 ¢ (cents)
ALT + 156 £ (pounds)
ALT + 253 ² (squared)
ALT + 0435 ³ (cubed)
ALT + 0215 × (multiply symbol)
ALT + 0425 © (copyright)

-*-*-*- Q & A -*-*-*-
Q: I have gone too long creating more problems than I solve with
associative dimensions. How do I get the 'real' dimension back
without recreating the whole dimension? (Which I usually do!)
A: Simple. Just replace whatever text is there with "<>" (no quotes).
The greater-than/less-than will be replaced by the actual
measurement. You can even put your text around it, such as
<>" - Typ. (Which might return something like 3.25" - Typ.)
Now, turn DIMASSOC back ON and let AutoCAD do the dimensioning
for you. (Because if it's not dimensioning correctly, it's most
likely drawn wrong, and that *will* come back to bite you!)
